The Border Collie Chronicles

Observations from (arguably) the World's Smartest Dogs;
(but, without question, the bestest friends!)
or, Life As We Understand It, as told from dad's shop.

Editorial Comment:  Last Friday (August 18th) was the second anniversary of the Snake Attack.  In remembering the Buppies that we lost as a result - we decided to repost a couple of inspirational aricles (Roo's will be next week).

Here is a re-post of one of the most "ossimistic" dog's early posts.  Ol' Patch had plenty that could keep her down ... but she wouldn't allow it.  She spent a good chunk of her time trying to pick and prop others up!  What a loving dog!!

Read back through the "old" articles and you'll see this common theme in ol' Patches posts ... she understood that life was real and had some hurts ... but more importantly, she understood that Life is REALLY, REALLY, REALLY good!!!  Don't waste your time wallowing around in self interest or self pity ... pick someone else up and try and "Carpe Diem"!!!

Random Acts …

By Patches

Now, all of us BC’s have been known to conduct a few random and unexplained (and, sometimes,  unexplainable) acts around this ol’ place … some of them, well, we hope that no one ever finds out about!  But we were sitting in the shop the night before the GREAT SNOW of 2013 while dad was reading stories on the internet … all of a sudden – dad “whooped” and got all emotional acting, we jumped up to see what the deal was and he shared a story[i] with us where people were buying each other coffee at some place called Tim Horton’s in Canada!  No one knows exactly who, why, or what started it, or why the 229th person didn’t want to buy coffee for the 230th person (might have been having an Annie Moment!?) …

This random act got all of us to thinking, and we all agreed that this was really a pretty cool deal and we figured that if we helped spread the word, maybe it’d go viral[ii]!  That would certainly make an improvement in this old world … heck, if nothing else, it would at least make someone’s day!  Think back, if you have to (hopefully not too far) – I bet all of us have had a little (or big) random act dropped on us, and we’ve surely dropped some on others as well!  How about that person that held the door open for you?  Or that guy that stopped to see if you needed help changing your flat tire on the side of the road?  Or that nice lady that helped you figure out the ingredients for that surprise meal that you were making (it was probably lasagna) for your loved ones![iii]  Random acts don’t have to be huge in order to make a difference – heck, I figure that if they at least bring a grin to someone’s face that you’ve just hit a home run!  Hopefully it will be contagious and that person goes ahead and does a random act to someone else (they call this “paying it forward”!)[iv]

Just imagine, if we could get more people doing random acts and paying it forward – WOW!! – that’d be really cool wouldn’t it!?  What a great way to live – hey, I think that would even fit as a pretty good model for a Dave moment[v] - as the concept relates to human interaction and relations!! Sometimes, I think that folks just get all caught up in their own little rat races (though there are not too many rats around this place since Momma Roo is THE ultimate mouser!) and chasing that ever elusive dollar that sometimes they forget their raisin’.  I imagine that most everybody, if not everybody, reading this little ol’ story has done a random act or two and has also paid it forward several times!  When was the last time?  … well, that’s too long![vi]  I reckon that we all oughta set out with a new plan for 2013 – let’s commit a random act, maybe even a few each week, and see if we can’t make a positive change in this ol’ world[vii]That’s my thought for the … WAIT A MINUTE … STOP THE PRESSES … I just witnessed a little random act right here in the shop (and this ain’t no lie), I just saw Annie get up and let Momma Roo have the only real dog bed in the shop, you know, the one under the red table, Roo's bed …  WOW!!![viii]As I was saying, that’s my thought for the day – I’m gonna do my part, how about you??!!

Adios Amigos!!!!!

We will open the book. Its pages are blank. We are going to put words on them ourselves. The book is called Opportunity and its first chapter is New Year's Day.

[ii] An image, video, or link that spreads rapidly through a population by being frequently shared with a number of individuals has 'gone viral'.  http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=to%20go%20viral  For more information on HOW to go viral – look no further, click here http://www.webdesignerdepot.com/2012/11/how-to-go-viral/

[iii] Mom-D and dad received a good one today at Sam’s – they were picking up dad’s beer and a stranger came up and told us that a 30 pack of Coors Light was $3.00 cheaper at HEB today!!  Heck of a nice fellow … then he told us that Michelob Ultra was $2.50 cheaper at Sam’s … we figure that he’s a pretty good guy and would probably fit right in on a Thursday evening!!

[iv] The world can seem like an unfriendly, threatening place, yet we all want safety, health, and happiness for ourselves and our loved ones. How can one ordinary person -- you or me -- make a positive difference in this world? One way is the practice "paying it forward." While the steps might be simple, the outcome could create a sense of luck and good will that changes the world.  Read more at http://www.wikihow.com/Pay-It-Forward

[vi] Kinda like - "Neighbor, how long has it been since you had a big, thick, steaming bowl of Wolf Brand Chili? Well, that's too long!"

[vii] Random acts of kindness are a means by which we make a deliberate attempt to brighten another person's day by doing something thoughtful, nice, and caring for them. Kindness is a way of showing others that they count and that even in the face of hostility and selfishness, you're making a stand for kindness.  To read more about how to practice random acts of kindness, please visit this site:  http://www.wikihow.com/Practice-Random-Acts-of-Kindness

[viii] Well, ok, so I am busted … dad did ask little Ann to do it (it is Momma Roo’s bed and all), but it’s still a step in the right direction and sometimes it’s up to us to help our buds “do the right thing”.  The concept is still valid, just the characters might be a little flawed at times!
