The Border Collie Chronicles

Observations from (arguably) the World's Smartest Dogs;
(but, without question, the bestest friends!)
or, Life As We Understand It, as told from dad's shop.

But ... I Do!

By Bubba and his sisters (and a little help from Billy!)

You know that dad likes to say ... "Life is MORE BETTER than good!"  And all of us BC's buy off on that!

Even ol' Merritt agrees and she has just had her first (and we hope last) tangle with a rattling stick!  The snake was so small that it couldn't even rattle yet - there was only one button!  But the bite still swelled her nose up quite a bit (she went to Dr. Ted's twice ... Sunday AND Monday morning ... dad says that they see us coming - but we all know that they are just providing great medical attention, and we DO DESERVE IT!)!  She's just fine now, and the little fella is in "snake heaven" ... mom-D wrangled it with a stick from a planter while she hollered for dad - who came with a pistol and a shovel (he wasn't sure where the little boogger would be) - the shovel turned out to be the tool of choice!

Anyway, while we were lounging around with Ms. Merritt (helping her to recuperate, don't you know), we got to thinking about some of dad's sayings and trying to figure them all out - or at least make some sense out of them!  We noticed dad moping around and whining about something the other day … and for no good reason that we could tell!  (I mean, what does he have to mope about?  Surrounded by four adoring Buppies like us!!)  And then, all of a sudden, he whooped, called us over - and gave us lovin'!  We've all seen him in a grumpy sort of mood, then when he starts visiting with us ... well, it seems like the cloud just lifts!

Anyway, I decided to write him a little poem (well, with a little help) … maybe it will keep him cheered up for a while …

Like My Dog

By Bubba, et. al.  [i]

He never tells me that he's sick of this house.
He never says why don't you get off that couch?
He don't cost me nothin when he wants to go out.
I want you to love me like my dog.

He never says I need a new attitude.
Him and my sister ain't always in a feud.
When I leave the seat up he don't think that it's rude.
I want you to love me like my dog does Baby.

When I come home, I want you to just go crazy.
He never looks at me like he might hate me.
I want you to love me like my dog.

He never acts like he don't care for my friends.
He never asks me where in the hell have you been?
He don't play dead when I wanna pet him.

I want you to love me like my dog does honey.

He never says “I wish you made more money”.
He always thinks that pull my finger is funny.
I want you to love me like my dog.

He don't get mad at me and throw a major fit.
When I say his sister is a bitch!

I want you to love me like my dog does baby.
When I come home, I want you to just go crazy.
He never looks at me like he might hate me.
I want you to love me like my dog.

.

i want you to love me like my dog does Baby.

All of us BC’s love dad more than an ol' poem and wagging tails can convey[ii].  And we know that he thinks pretty highly of us, as well!

With Love,

Some Bubba Quotes:

No one appreciates the very special genius of your conversations as a dog does.

Christopher Morley

If there are no dogs in Heaven, then when I die I want to go where they went.

Will Rogers

In order to really enjoy a dog, one doesn't merely try to train him to be semi human.  The point of it is to open oneself to the possibility of becoming partly a dog.

Edward Hoagland

If dogs could talk, perhaps we would find it as hard to get along with them as we do with people.

Karel Čapek

A truly rich man is one whose children [or Buppies] run into his arms when his hands are empty.

I Do Cartoon

You don’t own a dog, anymore than you own your life.  If a dog has any intellect, you are best to treat your relationship with your dog as a partnership.  It is all right that you have a majority ownership in the partnership – just remember that it IS a partnership.  He (she) does have the option of quitting you.

[i] Actually, "Like My Dog" is a song recorded by American country music artist Billy Currington.  It was released in October 2011 as the fourth single from his album Enjoy Yourself.  The song was written by Harley Allen and Scotty Emerick (not Bubba).  You can watch Billy and Paco’s version here:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a6xeFrDo0ao

[ii] Happy Birthday dad!
